There are many flavors of success at Home Video Studio, but one of the sweetest is that of a husband and wife applying their individual strengths as one and achieving their goals together. Such is the case with our January 2013 Studio Owners of the Month, Joe and Anna Yurick from Columbia MD.

Joe came to Home Video Studio from an extreme corporate background; in fact he worked in various positions at Honeywell for twenty-three years. In that time he rose through the ranks of responsibility as an IT engineer, as a manager and, ultimately, as an efficiency expert employing the Six Sigma method of improving quality and output within their processes. "There were some things I really liked," Joe remembers. "There is a certain amount of structure and certainty in an environment like that."

Anna, on the other hand, comes to Home Video Studio, with a much more "hands on" background in people skills. With experience in real estate as well as retail her methods of improving quality and output have more to do with good old customer service. "People respond to the competence and professionalism I portray," says Anna. "My experience in delivering what customers want and expect is what convinces them to trust me with their valuable possessions."

So why did this couple, with varied backgrounds and skills, decide to leave their relative comfort zones and go into business for themselves? Well, there's a saying around here: "Turn your passion into your profession." It's that word passion that best answers the question.

"I inherited a love of film and photography from my Dad," says Joe. "I got a movie camera when I was in seventh grade and I've been shooting and editing ever since. Doing something in this type of business was a twenty year dream of mine." Add to that growing passion a growing gnawing of uncertainty in the "certain" world of a large corporation. "Deciding to go into business for ourselves was a little scary," Yurick muses, "but just as scary was a growing feeling, given our economic times, that I could be eliminated. I'd seen it happen to other people and I didn't want to be lulled into the complacency of false security. So our studio started out as kind of a ‘plan B'. "

Joe had taken notice of ads in Videomaker magazine, and had even responded and received additional information before, but one day he decided to take action. Soon he was at a Show-n-Tell and became a studio owner that day! "Usually I like to take things very slowly and deliberately, but something told me this is what I was looking for," says Joe.

That day was nearly four and a half years ago. Joe and Anna came home and got up and running on a part-time basis. Then, after a year, they decided to go full-time. "I was juggling my corporate job with the studio, as well as teaching part time at a local university," remembers Joe, "and we just decided we couldn't keep juggling." So three and a half years ago, Anna decided to leave her position in the local school system to work the business full-time. In 2011, Joe took an early retirement from his corporate job to focus on Home Video Studio.

After four and a half years the Yuricks are going strong in their studio. They have, indeed, "turned a passion into a profession" and are making money with video. They have also learned a lot about video, about people, about business and about life.

"My biggest obstacle was challenging myself to get out of my comfort zone," laughs Joe. "I've learned that to accomplish things on your own you need to get comfortable being uncomfortable."

Anna offers: "Plus you always need to be planning for the future of your business. Always being mindful of where new customers will come from. You almost need to be two places at once - taking care of the present but always having your eyes on the horizon."

And they both agree on one important thing: "Stick with it," says Anna. "Yes," Joe encourages, "don't give up when things get bumpy...stick with your plan! We signed on in September of 2008 - - a few weeks later, if you remember, came some very disturbing news about our economy and all the doom and gloom of it's collapse. But we decided this is what we were going to do and we persisted. We didn't let circumstances dictate our actions."

This is the attitude that makes great Home Video Studio owners and we're proud to have Joe and Anna Yurick among us!
